Biography

Malcolm Eric Murray (born June 23, 1970) known professionally as Nutty P Beats, is an American rapper and producer best known for his work with Boney James on “Vinyl” on the Futuresoul album and “On the Prowl” on the Honestly Album.

Nutty P Beats currently lives in Los Angeles running his production company Nut N’ WhoLee with his business partner, Julian A. Baca.

Early Life:

Born in East Los Angeles CA on June 23rd, 1970, Nutty grew up immersed in music from the time he was born. His father, an avid music lover, played everything from Perry Como to Johnny Mathis to Miles Davis and traces of this influence can be found throughout his body of work. On the weekends, his house would be filled with guests dancing to music from his parents homeland, Guyana, South America. Reggae, Calypso and Soca were the norm and Nutty P Beats learned quickly how good a song can make people feel.

Music Career:

With music infused in his soul, he moved from the halls of his family house to his high school, Downtown Business Magnet, in 1986 where he began DJ-ing at school events. He was hooked and started rapping in 1993 with the Los Angeles based group L.A.W(Lethal Assault Weapons). Inspired by jazz, his style of native tongue rap similar to A Tribe Called Quest and Jungle Brothers drove the group to incorporate the traditional jazz beats he loved as a child. As a backpack rapper, he was known for the quality of his words and transitioned into a producer after being inspired by the production skills of a few members in his group.

Interested in producing his own music, Nutty began working with Alex Watson(Six) and Rodney Poole(War), using an Akai MPC60 II to teach himself how to produce, mix and create his own sound. Within a month he began producing his own music, yet due to a rivalry with a fellow musician within his group- it was entirely erased. Determined to keep going, Nutty P Beats left the group and went back to the studio on his own. Four months later, he produced a song for the group Kaution signed with Lench Mob Records called “Click, Click”.

Leaving the world of rap behind, Nutty P Beats dedicated himself to producing. He worked with the first west coast artist to get a major deal with Geffen Records, Madd Head, producing two songs, “Southern Cal Style” and “Representing’”, and went on to work with individuals such as Boney James, Roscoe Umali, Chris Sails, The Game, Jihad and many more. He also has been sought out to produce soundtracks for feature films such as Love Chronicles, ESPN's show The Hook Up and several documentaries.
